The Grumman F-14 Tomcat is a carrier-based, variable-geometry fighter aircraft. Designed to protect the fleet from air attacks, it was the first American-designed fighter to incorporate lessons learned from the Vietnam War. It became world-famous in 1986 thanks to the film Top Gun starring Tom Cruise.
The F-14 was designed to replace the naval version of the F-111, the F-111B. Development of the F-111B was prematurely abandoned in early 1968, as soon as it became apparent that the aircraft, being too large and heavy, would be unsuitable for operations from an aircraft carrier. The F-14's mission is to protect aircraft carriers from bomber attacks, which is why it is equipped with long-range missiles and a powerful radar.
The F-14 is a two-seater twin-engine jet with variable geometry: it can "fold" its wings around pivots located in the apexes of the fuselage connection. It thus adapts its aerodynamics to transonic and supersonic speed conditions (wings folded) or low speeds, during approaches and circling combat (wings unfolded). It is operated by a tandem: a pilot in front and his weapons officer at the rear. This arrangement is inspired by the F-4 Phantom II and provides great operational flexibility.
