TAMIYA F4U-1 Corsair 1/32 60324
F4U-1 Corsair ® “Birdcage”
Ref.60324
The F4U-1 was the first operational version of the famous American Corsair ® fighter, a unique aircraft with its inverted gull wings, its 2,000 hp engine and its large 4m diameter propeller. It was the first American fighter capable of reaching a speed of 400 mph (644 km/h). The F4U-1 version was characterized by its framed canopy which earned it the nickname “Birdcage”. Before being replaced by improved versions, the F4U-1 operated in the Pacific from land bases from February 1943 to mid-1944. There it proved superior to the Zero in many areas, exploiting its high speed in close combat to counter the maneuverability of the Japanese fighter. The famous Major Gregory “Papy” Boyington and many other US Navy and Marine Corps aces flew an F4U-1. The F4U-1 was one of the main instruments of the Allied victory in the central Solomon Islands (Guadalcanal), which initiated the long reconquest of the Pacific until the surrender of Japan.
To reproduce this legendary aircraft in the ultimate 1/32 scale, Tamiya designers spared no effort or expense.
