Roland Paulze d'Ivoy de la Poype was born on July 28, 1920, in the commune of Prado, into an aristocratic family. Passionate about aviation since his high school days, he became a cadet at the flight school in August 1939. After the surrender of France, he emigrated to the United Kingdom and became a pilot in the British RAF. He then went to the USSR as part of a French detachment of volunteer pilots, which upon arrival became the base of the Normandy fighter squadron. Roland de la Poype scored his first victory on August 31, 1943. The following month, two more aircraft were added to his personal tally: the Fw 190 and the Ju 87. The pilot's complete list of aerial victories includes 16 enemy aircraft shot down. De la Poype's courage and fighting qualities were rewarded with combat medals from the USSR and France. After the war, he continued to serve in the French Air Force and retired in 1947.
