In late 1968, the U.S. Army contracted several companies to conduct research on a program to create a multi-purpose tactical transport helicopter for amphibious operations and cargo delivery. The program was called UTTAS (Utility Tactical Transport Air System) and specified the following requirements: a crew of three, the ability to transport 11 to 15 soldiers in the cockpit, a power plant with two engines, and the ability to transport the helicopter itself inside a transport aircraft. Of the nine companies that submitted designs for the UTTAS helicopter, the U.S. Department of Defense selected two: Boeing-Vertol and Sikorsky. In 1976, following the tests, the Army selected Sikorsky as the winner of the UTTAS program and a contract was signed for the production of the first batch of helicopters, which received the Army designation UH-60A Black Hawk (the serial designation is Sikorsky S-70).
