The Jaguar 1 rocket-powered tank destroyer was converted from the obsolete 2 rocket-powered tank destroyer. This concept study was already considered in 1964/65, but it was not until 1978-82 that 316 older 2 rocket-powered tank destroyers were actually converted. A new armament system was installed with the HOT system, which offered various advantages and could be quickly and automatically reloaded using a drum magazine with eight missiles. Twelve additional missiles could be stored inside the vehicle.
Additionally, the fighting compartment was given additional armor, which is distinguished by its visible screw connections. In addition, tracked skirts were introduced for this rocket-powered tank destroyer.
Until the 1993-1995 KWS, the Jaguar 1 was not capable of night combat - it was then equipped with a noticeably large observation head in the middle at the front, which contained a thermal imaging device in addition to the day optics and goniometer. 157 of the vehicles received this combat upgrade.
The Jaguar 1 with thermal imaging device is 6.61 m long, 3.12 m wide and 2.55 m high. With a deep wading well, it can wade through water up to 1.8 m deep, has a trench crossing capacity of 2 m and a climbing capacity of 80 cm. The combat weight is 25.5 t, which allows the 29.9 l MTU engine developing 500 hp to reach a top speed of 70 km/h.
From 1996 to 2006, Jaguar 1s were in service with the Austrian armed forces.
